CBD Insole Technology

CBD Insole uses a dispersion of microencapsulated cannabidiol. Microencapsulation is a new, innovative patented application process in which microscopic droplets of CBD are wrapped with a protective polymeric coating. These miniature spherical containers protect the CBD from evaporation, oxidation and contamination until the polymeric coating is broken through pressure and friction, releasing CBD at the right moment.

As you wear your shoes with CBD Insole, the microcapsules break through friction and release the CBD to be absorbed through the skin of your feet.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive component present in the hemp plant. It is well known for its calming and relaxing properties, and is a powerful antioxidant. Our microcapsules contain pure crystalline CBD isolate (99.5% pure), meaning no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the constituent causing psychotropic effects) is present. Our CBD is derived from industrial hemp grown by licensed farmers in the USA.

99.5% pure natural CBD isolate is blended with moisturizing oil and through a patented process micro-encapsulating with a polymeric coating. After the CBD is encapsulated, the quality, integrity, and shape of the capsules are checked via SEM (scanning Electron Microscope) analysis, while the size is evaluated using a particle size analyzer.

How Is CBD Absorbed by the Skin?

First, it is important to understand skin physiology and CBD receptors. Skin is composed of three main layers; Epidermis, Dermis and Subcutaneous.

In the diagram above the green tree like structure is representative of Cannabinoid 1 & 2 (CB1 & CB2) receptors of the nervous system. CBD interacts with these receptors as well as 5-HT1a receptors a major receptor for serotonin release.  With the presence of these receptors in the skin, skin penetration is sufficient to provoke an effect without having to enter the blood stream.  This is called a transdermal application of CBD.

We had 3rd party testing performed using a Franz cell test on skin, which determined the CBD absorption effectiveness. Here are the results:

Pig skin is used for these testing purposes, since it mimics human skin very closely. The set-up of a Franz cell is illustrated here.

The active ingredient together with its carrier is present in the donor compartment on top of the pig skin. Below the pig skin is a receiver compartment filled with a suitable receptor medium. After a defined period of time, the pig skin is washed and the CBD present in the skin and/or in the receptor medium is extracted and quantified. Optionally, a fabric is placed on top of the pig skin to mimic the situation where an extra layer of clothing or bed sheet is present between the treated fabric and the skin.

 

Franz Cell testing shows that CBD skin Penetration happens optimally between 4 and 7 hours. Afterwards, skin seems saturated and doesn’t facilitate further penetration.

  • Naked skin: up to 60% of the CBD has penetrated into the skin after 7h or 24h of contact time.
  • Skin covered with in-between fabric: 30% of the CBD has penetrated the textile and penetrated the skin after 7/24hours.
  • No penetration into blood stream (but not necessary thanks to CBD receptors in skin).
